Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has asked Nigerian youths to rise up to the challenge of leadership, in order to chart a new course for good governance in the country.
The governor, in a solidarity message through his Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur to commemorate this year’s International Youth Day with the theme; “Inter-generational Solidarity: A Key to Inclusive and Sustainable Political Participation,” urged the youths to take leadership responsibilities through electoral democratic processes.
“The tomorrow you yearn for has come. Deploy your energies, intellect and skills to positive engagements rather than mundane issues,” he said.
The statement said that Governor Ortom acknowledged the exploits and accomplishments of Nigerian youths globally in many fields of human endeavours, especially in science, computer and information technology and asked them to put these into positive ventures, stating it was the only way to take advantage of the gap in leadership in the country.
“Nigerian youths have the solutions to the myriads of socio- economic and political challenges if given the opportunity,” he stated.
He cautioned against criminal activities and noted that there were decent ways of earning a living without involving in any illegal activities.
Governor Ortom, while wishing the Nigerian youths a successful celebration, assured the youths in the state that his administration will continue to provide the enabling environment for youths to realize their potential.
Relatedly, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Titus Uba has warned that, relegating youths to background would be inimical to the development and progress of Nigeria.
A statement made available to newsmen last Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to Uba stated that “Youths constitute the most critical segment of any society and relegating them to the background would be inimical to the development of the country.”
According to the statement, government owes the youths an environment that encourages them to unleash their potentials and realize their dreams.
He promised to create a system that would nurture the talents of youths in the state and ensure their full involvement in government, if given the mandate to occupy the office as the next governor of the state.
The state number one lawmaker also states that his 9th led Benue Assembly has initiated a bill that seeks to establish the Benue State Youth Development Commission, noting that the bill when passed, shall among other things, create jobs and other economic development opportunities for youths in the state.
The statement wished all youths a joyous and fruitful celebration, while the Benue PDP gubernatorial candidate enjoined youths not to indulge in deviant behaviour that could hinder the development of their potentials and derail their future.
