An association of media professionals of Benue origin under the aegis of Conference of Benue Journalists (CBJ) has condemned in strong terms, the assassination attempt on Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, by men suspected to be killer herdsmen.
The Voice had earlier reported that people suspected to be Fulani militia, Saturday ambushed and attacked the convoy of Governor, Ortom at Tyo-Mu in Makurdi Local Government Area, along Makurdi-Gboko road.
In a statement issued on Sunday by CBJ Vice President, Ewache Ajefu, they noted with worry the attempt on the life of Governor Ortom and the recent killing of the brother of one of the former governors in the state, describing it as a deliberate effort to make the State ungovernable.
The statement therefore, urged the Federal Government to step up security machinery to end all forms of criminality in the country and live up to its responsibility of protecting lives and property.
“While members of the group commend the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu for swiftly deploying a team of specialised investigators to fish out the perpetrators, we call on Governor Ortom never to be deterred by the attack but he should remain focus and courageous in providing good leadership to the people of the state,” the statement said.
