Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU Benue State University Chapter has suspended its over 3-week-old strike which commenced on the 26th of May 2023, over unpaid allowances.
The suspension of the strike was disclosed to The Voice today Wednesday by the ASUU BSU Chairman Dr. Victor Kwaghfan via telephone conversation.
Dr. Kwaghfan explained that the industrial action was suspended today after Congress, stating that the school management had reacted to some of their demands even though not all allowances have been fully paid, so it was decided that the strike should be suspended
” We are a responsible union and we have heeded their plea that they should be given time, within which they will take care of all the demands, we considered their plea and the fact that the state government has also extended an invitation to us, so we believe that now we have been heard, we decided to suspend the industrial action”, he said.He said that the union has given the school management a time frame between now and the next NEC meeting which is in August 2023 to take care of the issues that led to the strike. He stressed that he was hopeful that the school management will comply and meet their demands because they know the consequences of not complying, and believes that they will be proactive in meeting the demands of the academic staff union. It will be recalled that ASUU BSU embarked on an indefinite strike on the 26th of May 2023 over unpaid allowances such as End academic allowances, Postgraduate allowances, and GST allowances among others.
