Following court order asking the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off their strike, the Federal Government (FG) has directed that the universities be reopened.
The decision of the FG was communicated to the Vice Chancellors through the National Universities Commission (NUC), an umbrella body for the administration of universities in Nigeria via a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts, NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed.
The letter addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities stated: “Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses,” the letter partly read.
The Voice reports that the National Industrial Court (NIC) of Nigeria last Wednesday ordered ASUU to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.
However, the union said the court cannot force them to return to class. It also said it has appealed the judgement and also await professional legal advice on the matter for further action.
