Benue State House of Assembly has passed the 2024 appropriation bill of Two Hundred and Twenty Five Billion, Seven Hundred and Twenty Seven Million,Three Hundred and Ninety Five Thousand, Two Hundred and Six Naira, Ninety Seven Kobo (N225,727,395 ,206 . 97) into law.
The appropriation bill was passed into law during the House’s emergency plenary held at the New Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, Thursday.
The budget as passed by the house has a total of One Hundred and Ten Billion, Four Hundred and Eighty Seven Million, Thirty Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Sixty Five naira Ninety Nine Kobo (N110,487,033,965.99) as recurrent expenditure while the sum of One Hundred and Fifteen Billion, Two Hundred and Forty Million,Three Hundred and Sixty One Thousand, Two Hundred and Forty Naira, Ninety Nine Kobo (N115,240,361,240.99) stands as the capital expenditure, with a deficit financing of N30,798,000,000.00
The House also called for the addition of N96,736,832.39 to the Benue State House of Assembly, been shortage of personnel cost
They cautioned public sector entities in the state against extra-budgetary spending as it is a breach of the constitution even as it says it is also considering taking decisive actions against public sector entities that are avowed to perpetuate a violation of the Constitutional provisions.
Earlier, members representing Makurdi South,Tarka, Agasha, Gwer and Kwande West State Constituencies Honourables Douglas Akya, Manger Manger, William Ortyom, Elias Audu and Thomas Dugeri, respectively, called for improved allocation to the state media houses to enable them stand firm and operate effectively.
Makurdi South representative, Hon Akya particularly observed that the State Governor should always be prompt in presenting the budget, stating that, if need be, the House should make a law stipulating a time frame for the Governor to present budget to the House .
It could be recalled that, the Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia recently presented the 2024 Budget Christened “Budget of infrastructure development, job creation and poverty alleviation and appealed to the House to give it accelerated consideration.
