The 23 council chairmen in Benue State have been presented with one brand new Toyota Hilux vans each by the state government to facilitate their official duties.
Presenting the vehicles at the Benue State People’s House, Makurdi on Monday at Aper Aku Lodge, Governor Samuel Ortom noted that mobility remained critical in the discharge of the responsibilities in their various council areas.
The governor, who congratulated the contractor noted that the choice of the Hilux was due to the rough nature of rural roads where the chairmen reside, saying it was the best form of vehicle for those roads.
He explained that timely purchase and distribution of the vehicles was the government’s way of providing minimal comfort for the chairmen in performing their task in governance at the local level.
Governor Ortom urged them to maintain and make judicious use of the vehicles in carrying out their duties in their areas and add value to governance at the grassroots
“The vehicles will not kill you and you should not kill the vehicles,” Ortom said.
Earlier, Special Adviser to the governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr Ken Achabo said the 2020 model Hilux vans were procured to facilitate mobility and effective administration of duties by the local government chairmen.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, State Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Chairman and Chairman, Guma Local Government, Dr Mike Uba expressed appreciation to the governor for his efforts in ensuring that governance at the third tier is effectively carried out.
