A governorship contender in the 2023 Benue State governorship race, Dr Paul Angya, has said the state needs a governor with the will, courage and strength to sustain the fight against the invaders of the state.
The former Director-General, Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) stated this recently at the palace of the Och’Idoma, Agabaidu, Elias Ikoyi Obekpa when he paid homage to the Idoma paramount ruler to solicit the support and blessings of the Idoma Traditional Council towards his ambition to govern Benue State.
He used the opportunity to congratulate the Vice Chairman, Benue State Council of Chiefs on his recent appointment as the Chancellor of the National University of Nigeria (NOUN), pointing out that the appointment is an honour not to only him as a person and the Idoma nation but the entire Benue people.
The Head of Department of International Law and Jurisprudence at the Bingham University, Abuja, said he was aware of Benue Zone C agitation to govern Benue in 2023 and if it is the will of God for that to happen this time, he would support the zone, but if otherwise, the entire Zone C should stand behind him to succeed.
“I am human being and not unaware of the agitation of the Idoma to govern the state. If God decides that it is what will happen, I will support any good candidate from the zone. But if othervise, I should be considered,” he said.
The Fellow of Security Institute (FSI), lamented that he has come to seek for the leadership of Benue State at the most difficult time in the history of the state when the state is besieged at all fronts by herdsmen militia attacks and other security challenges.
According to Dr Angya, who stated that the situation requires more than tribal affiliation to handle, Governor Samuel Ortom must be commended for standing his ground against the invaders of the state, even with threat to his life. He emphasised that Benue needs a governor with the will, courage and strength to sustain the fight against the invaders at the expiration of Governor Ortom’s tenure in 2023.
Responding, the Och’Idoma, Agabaidu Elias Obekpa thanked the aspirant for coming to his palace to seek his support to become governor of the state, adding that his children in the zone are also agitating for the position but it is when God says it will be, that it will be.
The Idoma paramount ruler used the opportunity to call for unity of purpose in his Kingdom, wishing Dr Angya well as he goes round the state in search of the mandate.
Meanwhile, first class chiefs in Idoma land have appealed to Tiv politicians eyeing the seat of Benue Governor in 2023 to kindly consider their Idoma brothers who have never had the opportunity of governing the state.
The Idoma chiefs who made the appeal recently in Otukpo, Benue State, while addressing Angya, said doing so will not only promote democracy in the state but also strengthen the existing communal relations among the two
tribes in Benue.
Speaking, the Adirahu Nyi’Igede, Chief Oga Ero, commended the aspirant for possessing high credentials which he said are governorship materials but asked him to look into the fate of the people of Benue South who have never occupied the seat.
He asked Angya to be peaceful in his political outing, adding that, no man gets anything except approved by God.
On their part, the trio of Oche Apa -Agatu, Chief Baba Odangla, Otukpo-Ohimini, Chief Oche Okochi and that of Enone, Chief George Edeh agreed that Dr Angya has what it takes to be governor, but reminded him of the Idoma position.
The Voice reports that Angya was accompanied on the visit by a retinue of his campaign coordinators.
