Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, Most Reverend Wilfred Anagbe has called for partnership between the government and church for effective development at the grassroots.
Bishop Anagbe, delivering a homily Sunday, during the one year memorial thanksgiving mass in honour of late Prof. Godwin Achinge at Good Shepherd Chaplaincy, Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, enjoined the government to partner with the church for grassroot development, stating that the the church has contributed tremendously to the development of the state in education and other areas. He charged political leaders, instead of accumulating wealth for themselves at the detriment of the people, to implement policies that will bring sustainable development.
The bishop described the late Prof. Achinge as an medical doctor who carried out his duties with dedication and in-depth knowledge. He thanked God for the opportunity to celebrate mass in honour of an individual that was part of the University management in the capacity of Deputy Vice Chancellor before his demise.
Speaking, State Deputy Governor, Engr Benson Abounu, eulogized the deceased for his laudable contribution to policies of the Ortom administration, especially in the peak of COVID-19, described him as an excellent man and doctor of repute who made inputs in ensuring Benue recorded low rates of cases while serving as Vice Chairman of the State Action Committee.
Engr Abounu who spoke on behalf of the State Government thanked all for their presence to pay homage to Prof. Achinge, commended his generosity to the society by making healthcare affordable for his patients, said he was an individual that was concerned about the growth of BSU and its teaching hospital.
The Wife of the Governor, Dr Eunice Ortom who was represented by Prof. Member George-Genyi consoled the family of the deceased with a prayer to God to strengthen and bless them, thanked the University community for standing by the family in the last one year, while Vice Chancellor of BSU, Prof. Tor Iorapuu thanked guests for attending the memorial service for the deceased, and assured his family of continuous support from the university.
In separate remarks, representatives of the family, Chief Emmanuel Achinge and former Commissioner for Works, Engr Felix Atume thanked Governor Samuel Ortom, his deputy and BSU for their support and show of love towards the family with an appreciation to Bishop Anagbe and all for their presence at the memorial service.
