Benue State Government has reiterated commitment to partner University of Nigeria, Nsukka for academic excellence, peace and development strategies which is the panacea for the progress of any society and nation.

Governor Samuel Ortom said this recently when the Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Charles Igwe paid him a courtesy call at the Conference Hall, Governor’s Lodge, Benue People’s House, Makurdi.

He thanked the institution for the platform they presented to him last year to present a paper on: “Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment” which he received accolades from many Nigerians.

Governor Ortom said, when he started the advocacy for open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment, many thought, he was brewing disunity among Nigerians, especially the Fulani herdsmen, however, today most of the people who were against the initiative are singing praises of the initiative as the best practice of animal husbandry. He called on all Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation to team up to fight insecurity and other challenges for the good and progress of the country.

The governor who commended Prof. Igwe and his team for maintaining the high standard the institution is known for called on them to keep the tempo. “We in Benue State, we have benefited a lot and apart from the higher institutions situated in the state, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has been the largest alumnus in the state, that is due to the academic capability of the institution,” he stated.

Earlier, Prof. Igwe said he and his delegation paid the courtesy call on the governor, in order to reaffirm UNN’s partnership with the state, in the area of academic development.

Prof. Igwe described Benue as a state that its indigenes are known for excelling in academic pursuit. He added that, people of the state are hospitable, very intelligent and strong in standing for the truth as well as in defence of their land.

“I commend, Governor Samuel Ortom for standing firm for the progress, development and security of his people. He is one of the Nigerian leaders who is doing everything possible for the up lift, unity and development of our country,” he noted.
