A 30-year-old applicant, Ternenge Peter, in Makurdi was Tuesday convicted and sentenced to 30 working days of community service for destroying campaign billboard belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Makurdi by a Chief Magistrate Court.
The convict, who was arraigned by the Benue Police Command for mischief under Section 329 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004 pleaded guilty to the charges attributing it to the influence of alcohol.
He said: “The allegations are true, am a supporter of Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC). I was drunk and I tore his campaign posters at Balcony. And after two months, when I was drunk again I saw a billboard of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), mounted at Wurukum and I tore it under the influence of alcohol,” he stated.
The prosecutor, Inspector, Kuegh Abugh told the court that the victim was reported to the police on August 22, 2022, by the PDP state Publicity Secretary, Bemgba lortyom, in company of one Bobby Uper, the Chairman, Taxforce on illegal motor parks, Makurdi, who arrested him and brought him to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi.
He said: “One Ternenge Peter ‘M’ of opposite Benue State University Gate, Makurdi on 21/08/2022 at about 1000hrs, was seen destroying the PDP billboard mounted at Wurukum roundabout value yet unknown and when he saw the youths coming he ran away. And on the 22/08/2022 at about 0730hrs the same Ternenge Peter was seen at the same party billboard and was arrested.”
Inspector Abugh asked the court to try the accused person summarily when he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Granting her judgement, the Magistrate, Mrs Kadoon Gbasha, Esq. cautioned the convict to break free from the habit of alcoholism, and channel his money and energy to useful ventures, stating that any offense committed under intoxication shall be punished accordingly.
She summarily convicted the accused person on the charges of mischief under Section 329 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004.
“The convict is sentenced to community service to be carried out within the court premises for 30 working days from 9am to 2pm, in default, the convict shall serve two months imprisonment,” she ruled.
