From Esther Akaa, Lafia
Nasarawa State government has arrested 10 persons for violating the state environmental sanitation laws in Lafia, the state capital.
The Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Kwanta Yakubu, disclosed this on Saturday while addressing journalists, immediately after monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in Lafia.
Yakubu, who spoke through the Chief Environment Officer at the ministry, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, said those arrested violated the sanitation laws and were prosecuted according to their offences.
The commissioner, however expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by residents of the state during the July sanitation exercise, saying it was good, compared to previous sanitation exercises.
He also commended house and shop owners for clearing drainages around their environments, saying that the act has reduced flooding in this year.
Yakubu also noted that the government had strengthened the capacity of environmental inspectors in all the 13 local government areas of the state for efficiency, even as he called on the public to always keep their environment clean to guard against the outbreak of diseases.
“Residents should cooperate more with the government towards ensuring that the state is clean in their best interest.
“If the environment was kept clean, it will guard against possible outbreak of any disease, thereby ensuring improved healthy living of the people,’’ he said.
