Niger State House of Assembly has called upon the Executive arm of government to resuscitate the monthly environmental sanitation in the state.
This was made known in a motion raised by Shuaibu Lima Iya representing Suleja State Constituency at plenary Wednesday.
Iya explained that resuscitating the monthly sanitation will mitigate and guide against flood disaster, other unwanted situations, as well as save the state huge sums expended in the provision of healthcare.
“We have seen flood disaster in the past. It was not very easy for citizens of this state and other states across the country as there were many victims and casualties. Honestly speaking, me and you were directly or indirectly affected,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that unhealthy environment will endanger the life, safety and welfare of Niger citizens
He quoted Section 20 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended which says; “government shall provide safety for the environment by safe guiding water, air, land amongst others.”
Contributing, members representing Gbako State Constituency, Yabagi Hussiani Akote, AbdulMalik Madaki of Bosso State Constituency and Ahmed Bello of Agwara State Constituency in their separate remarks, stated that there was need to create awareness to sensitize the public through the media on the need to keep and maintain a healthy environment.
They also stressed the need for adequate provision for refuse collection and dumping.
The House resolved to invite relevant sanitation agencies to interface with the committee on environment to deliberate more on sanitizing the environment.
