Group calls for adequate budgeting of AYP activities

The Benue State Technical Working Group (TWG) on Adolescent Health Development (AHD) Programme has called on the Benue State Government and other relevant agencies to create adequate budgeting, as well as ensure proper implementation of Adolescents and Youths Programmes (AYP) activities, in order to support and complement Implementing Partners’ (IPs) efforts.

This call was made in a communiqué issued at the end of a two-day meeting of the TWG organized by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) in conjunction with the Benue State Ministry of Health (SMoH) as part of the agenda for Monitoring of Implementation of Priority/Annual Operational Plan developed in 2021, which was held in the Conference Hall of Smile View Hotel, Makurdi.

The communiqué was drawn up based on the health challenges faced by Adolescents and Young Person’s (AYPs) which includes but not limited to sexual and reproductive health problems; unsafe and unprotected sex and its consequences; intentional and unintentional injuries; mental health problems, as well as substance use and abuse among others. it called on all implementing partners to improve their collaboration with different government agencies by maintaining consistent communication with various desk officers and funding partners to ensure commitment to holding TWG meetings quarterly.

It called for training of more health care workers on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) to provide services that are adolescent and youth friendly at health facilities. The communiqué also called for intensified sensitisation on Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Person’s Prohibition (VAPP) Laws in schools and communities including hard-to-reach areas even as it called for printing and disseminating of AYP-friendly IEC materials to the target populations.

On the issue of HIV, the communiqué advocated that children living with the virus should be made fully aware of their status and also made to understand that they can achieve their dreams.

Meanwhile, the communiqué stressed the need for all partners and stakeholders to work in synergy for proper implementation of the work plan, with a view to reporting activities regularly to the appropriate channels as and when due.

Activities carried out during the meeting include presentation on implementation status of the 2021 state plan, as well as  presentation of data on services provided for AYP in the state from January to June using agreed template even as activities to address challenges and scale up plan for the rest of the year was developed at the end of the meeting.
