The people of Guma Local Government Area have been charged to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the Guma 1 State Constituency by-election slated for tomorrow.
The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia gave the charge Friday during a chat with journalists shortly after a security meeting held at Government House Makurdi.
Governor Alia who disclosed that a level playing ground has been provided for all political parties, further assured that all modalities including security, have been put in place towards ensuring the successful conduct of the election.
The Governor said, “I pray for peace and peace alone to reign.
“All political gatherings and meetings must be disbanded and discontinued
“We are talking about just six wards in Guma Local Government Area and not the entire state.
“I am appealing that all the anxieties and tensions built up in the air be eased out.
“We are not a lawless people and it is our hope that everything plays out well tomorrow as we play according to the provisions of the law.
“It is in line with the above that we held a security meeting to know exactly what we ought to do and so, I will like to assure members of the public, especially those coming out to exercise their franchise to turn out without fear.”
Also speaking on the level of preparedness the state command, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Adesina Emmanuel said all hands are on deck to ensure that the exercise goes on hitch free.
“There is going to be massive deployment of officers and men of the force to the area for the election.
“I want to warn those planning to disrupt the exercise to shelve the idea as there will be no room for them to execute their plans”.
CP Adesina therefore urged the electorate to have confidence in the ability of the police to provide adequate security.
The meeting was attended by heads of various security agencies in the state.
