About four (4) persons are said to have been killed by unknown gunmen in Ijegwu, Obi Local Government Area of Benue State.
The Voice gathered that the victims were returning from Otukpo around 7:00pm on Friday when they ran into the gunmen who had laid ambush.
They opened fire on the vehicle conveying the travellers which brought it to a halt, killing four in the process even as other passengers also ran into the operation.
A source from the area, who simply identified himself as Egbe said the attackers abducted eight (8) passengers and were demanding N6 million per person as ransom.
“I learnt they have reduced the amount now which I cannot ascertain yet,” said Egbe.
This correspondent’s attempt to reach the Police in Oju proved abortive as the telephone line of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Oju was not accessible as at the time of filing the report.
However, the Second-Class Chief for Obi, Chief Chris Ijale confirmed the ugly development.
He condemned the constant attacks on his people by men of the underworld, adding that, there is need to restore police post to the area.
“I hereby appeal to Inspector General of Police, the Benue State Commissioner of Police and the state government to address the security situation in Obi, especially, the restoration of Police Division in the area,” he said.
Recall that the police were relocated from Obi Local Government, following a dispute between the police and the community sometime ago.
