Aondoseer Iortim Polycarp, a diploma holder in Mass Communication from the Benue State University, in this interview with VALENTINE VAATIA, Business Editor of The Voice shares his experiences in his line of business, challenges and prospects.
I am Ningev, in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State. I have a Diploma in Mass communication, I started my business and it is called Aseekys Ventures, which comprises of Aseekys barbers and Aseekys Laundry which offers dry cleaning and laundry services and by the grace of God the business is moving and I have people working under me.
What inspired you in to this business?
Actually in 1997 I was in secondary school, I ran into financial difficulties and I took the challenge and passion then started learning how barb to support my academics, that was the period I lost my father and found it difficult to cope, so enrolled myself to learn how to barb.
For how long have you been into this business?
I started in 1997 in the village and when I came to Makurdi, I saw the creativity in me and the passion in me so I said let me start and I was perfect in it and to glory of GOD it has come to pass today.
Did you start the two businesses at the same time?
No I started barbing and when I begin to see the business is helping me, I saved money and I decided to have a car of my own so that I will expand my business, I went into the transport business and have an office of my own, then I had the dry cleaning business that was how I started and today those things are on ground.
What are the Challenges you face in the business?
Yes, as a matter of fact, I saw that the environment needed such services, I decided to go into the business for the community, I looked around and that both services, people were not into it in the area at that time when I started, people were not getting this services so I looked at the situation and so that people were going far to look this services I saw that if I go into this business it will benefit the community.
How is the patronage in both the businesses?
It has been very ok, a lot of people begin to admire the services rendered, because we are so perfect in what we do, and the environment also gives a good advertisement to the business.
Do have people that work under you, do you train people?
Yes, I have people that I train and I also have staff, those that I trained are three in number, and my staff are two in the barbing aspect, while the laundry I have three workers, and a trained one.
How was business when COVID19 started?
Actually, business was so though, but by the grace of GOD we are doing it. It was not easy most especially when there was lockdown, we found it to come to work because people where not coming, there was low patronage, but we thank GOD things are getting back to normal, business now is better than during the COVID19 Pandemic.
How rewarding is the business?
In terms of naira and kobo we are managing, because Nigeria today it is what one earn at the end of the day. God has been faithful when we come to work, we get what we can take home as our daily bread so I thank God for that.
Did you access any of the government loans to improve on your business?
No, I have been trying, but it has not worked out I use my previous savings to improve on my business.
How are you coping in the area of taxation?
Yes, it has become drastic; each time they come sometimes we have not done any work to earn money while they come from various angles for money. We give them if we have, we plead with them if we do not have the money ready, it has been so hectic to us.
How will you advice the youth to go into business?
I will advise them against staying at home, they should find something doing, even the bible say, the works of our hands will be blessed, and not staying that one will be blessed, but by having something doing, be creative and have focus on anything you have doing so that GOD will guide you and help you, they should not wait for government to create job opportunity for us, they should start with the little they have.
How do you see yourself in the next five years?
In the next five years I belief that GOD will expand me bigger than how it is today, because my dreams are very wonderful, I want to grow and be like Dangote. In next five years, I belief that God will expand me bigger than what it is today. I have dream that my last line of business should be a guest house’ it should be bigger than this one as GOD has been opening my eyes to see things I will invest and get money, so I belief that that also will come to pass.
