Increased juvenile delinquency: Reawakening the consciousness of mothers

A mother taking care of children.

The surging wave of juvenile delinquency and moral decadence in the society nowadays requires deep reflection, meditation ,debate and re-strategizing on how to curb or minimise the menace that ,if not checked will destroy the coming generations.

Vices like, indecent dressing, cyber crime, kidnapping, political thuggery, rape, drug addiction, just to mention a few, been engaged in by many youths can be traced to ignorance, parental negligence among other reasons, apart from poverty and unemployment.

Freedom to illicit sexual involvement by youths in recent time, have given rise to having very young parents who can barely handle themselves nor train the children they bear, some leave them in the hands of old and exhausted or busy parents who can hardly take care of them.

However, some of the youths found in awkward behaviour come homes with both parents living under the same roof, providing and nurturing these children yet, most are still wayward. Why then do such turn out that way? Is always the rhetorical question.

One of the most common responses, whether accepted or not, is negligence from the mother, the woman/mother has been particularly endowed by God with peculiar strength of sensitivity, patience, peace, love, humility and gentle in place of the physical and authority given to the man.

These qualities sadly, are gradually eluding most modern women/mothers, who are now engaged in so many businesses, pursuing career, wealth, beauty, firm unlike, those mothers in the past who had complete devotion to the care and holistic upbringing of a child or children.

This why the misbehaviour of the child is mostly blamed on the mother. It is observed with great dismay, the crop of mothers the society is now moulding in the name of economic meltdown, hardship, single parenting, civilization; forcing women to take up corporate jobs to support the family, instead of giving enough time to grooming and bearing children.

The some children are at a  formative age, left in the hands of caregivers, whose main objective are their financial benefits, allowing children to live independently, take decisions at tender stage with no or little parental guide or direction ,especially on emotional growth just like the Western society do.

It then gradually leads to unmet expectations by the children/youths causing some violent, rude, fierce, wild attitude to elders, parents, disobedience to law, order and constituted authorities.

“This unnoticed trend is what has lent to the present predicament confronting the society. The motherly consciousnesses of absolute care, time, love, admonishing of the child from a young age must be awaken, against their “busy schedules” to salvage the little that is left.””-quote

Benue state, Nigeria and the world generally have not achieved the much desired peace in pursuit of security due to some of these reasons. The more they are being corrected by the law; more are being moulded in the homes.

So much is been spent on arms and military by the state and federal governments in the fight against insurgence, juvenile delinquency to kidnapping, robbery (when they become adults) but too little attention is given to the womanly/motherly angle of curbing the menace by concentrating more on the children’s wellbeing having little to do with others tasks.

This has rather been creating new levels of insecurities from Taliban, Boko Haram to ‘Fulani invasion’ or ‘Armed herds men’, kidnapping, vandalism, ‘Banditry’ just to mention a few despite all the efforts made to foster peace and development.

The need for peace in Benue can not be overemphasized. It is on this premise that there has been lots of peace initiatives over the years by women groups in order to foster peace and security in the country and the world.
