Benue State will be fielding 126 candidates for the National Assembly (NASS) elections, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released final list of candidates for the 2023 national elections.
A press release by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, Esq, Tuesday said: “The list published today contains the names of candidates validly nominated for national elections at the close of party primaries and the period earmarked for withdrawal and substitution of candidates.”
“All the 18 political parties have fielded candidates and their running mates for the presidential election. For legislative elections,1,101 candidates are vying for 109. Senatorial seats and 3,122 candidates for federal constituencies.”
He explained that, “a total of 4,223 candidates are contesting for 469 legislative positions.
“In terms of gender distribution, out of which 3,875 are male made up of 35 for presidential and vice presidential, 1,008 for Senate and 2,832 for House of Representatives. Similarly, 381 females comprising 1 for Presidential, 92 for Senate and 288 for House of Representatives are contesting. There are also 11 Persons With Disability (PWD) in the race,” he added.
The breakdown of 126 candidates for the National Assembly elections in Benue shows that the state has 30 Senatorial candidates out of which only one (1) is female.
There are 11 candidates in North East, 9 in North West among them is the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and 10 in the South Senatorial district. Political parties featuring candidates in the election are: AA, ADC, ADP, APC, APPGA, LP, NNPP, NRM, PDP, PRP, SDP and ZLP.
The list for House of Representatives has 96 candidates for in the state and out of the number, 11 are women.
The representatives list for candidates in Benue has among others, wife of the Minister for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Regina Akume for Gboko/Tarka and that of former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Orientation, Ngunan Addingi for the race in Buruku Federal Constituency.
The list may also put to rest speculations about the Gwer/ Gwer West APC ticket with the publication of the name of the former Acting Managing Director, Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA), Terhemba David Nongo as against that of Arc. Asema Ach oh plgpo.
It is worthy of note that the name of one of the Senatorial candidates for Benue North West, Gbillah Mark Terseer has his name appearing for LP and NNPP, serial number 203 and 207 respectively.
