insecurity and enhanced the agricultural potentials in the North-East region to boost economy of the region came top on the agenda of the meeting of the North-East Governors’ Forum, which was opened in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital recently.
In a communiqué signed at the end of the two-day meeting by the Chairman of the forum and Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, the forum said the meeting became necessary to advance regional cooperation and tackle the challenges of the region.
The forum lamented with dismay, negatives effects of drug abuse and narcotics which they ascribed as one of the major fuel of insecurity in the region.
It also expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for new strategies against insurgency and terrorism that has reduced criminal activities in the zone.
According to the communiqué, the North-East region has a lot of potentials and urged colleagues to prioritize intervention in agriculture to boost food production and job creation.
The forum condoled with President Buhari over the death of former Chief of Army Staff, late General Attahiru Ibrahim and other military officials who lost their lives in a plane crash in Kaduna State.
It also condoled families of military personnel over unfortunate incident that led to the lose of their lives ones lives and prayed for repose of their souls. While congratulating the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Faruk Yahaya on his appointment, charged him to use his experience to bear in the lives of citizens and uphold professionalism in the course of his duty.
The communiqué further stated that the forum agreed to emulate the agricultural initiative of Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State in five states in the region.
It also directed the North-East Development Commission to report the recommendations to forum secretariat for implementation.
The forum calls for diplomatic support region to back drop humanitarian gesture to stabilize them in the zone.
The forum which noted slow approach of work in some projects across the states in the region, called on the commission to consult various states on priority projects for intervention in order to complete the projects initiated in the zone.
It called on the Federal Character Commission to include North-East region in plans by various ministries and other federal government agencies for employment, as they expressed dismay over recent employment exercises, which they said did not represent the region well.
They promised to revisit all federal government ministries and agencies to ensure North-East to have equal rights like others region across the country.
In the communiqué, the forum which called on the National Assembly to review the Mambila Hybrid power project in the supplementary budget 2021 urged President Buhari to ensure the Mambila Hybrid power project is completed and commissioned by his administration. The forum stated that the project has huge benefits of power generation to not only the North-East region but the entire country, and job creation for Nigeria youths.
The meeting had in attendance, Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba, Prof. Babagana Zulum of Borno, Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, while the Governor of Yobe was represented by his Deputy Idi Barde.
