From Teryima Ajijah, Jos
The Member, House of Representatives for Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, Dachung Bagos, has charged his constituents to protect themselves against further attacks.
The lawmaker informed his constituents that the Constitution of Federal Republic Nigerian 1999 as amended gives citizens right to protect themselves against attacks.
“I want to also call on all Plateau State people, especially youth to be united and ensure they are not taken unawares, they should protect their communities by preventing any further attacks.
“Section 33 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution provides that persons living in Nigeria, shall have a right to life and no one shall be deprived intentionally, of his life unless in execution of the sentence of a court of criminal office of which he has been found guilty,” he said.
Mr Bagos who gave this charge in a press release on Sunday, was reacting to the arrest of a Fulani man who was caught by security agents Saturday at Akwanga, Nasarawa State with heavy ammunitions being transported to Jos Plateau State, allegedly to aid Fulani militia to continue attack on Plateau people.
The lawmaker charged security agencies to arrest the arms carriers who escaped to Jos, according to the suspect who was arrested.
“I (Bagos) call on the security agencies in Plateau State to take action like their colleagues in Nasarawa state to arrest the remaining six gang members who were on their way with loaded arms to Plateau State for another round of deadly attacks,” he maintained.
The lawmaker who tasked the Plateau state government and security agencies to live up to their responsibility of safeguarding lives and property of all citizens, insisted that those armed carriers who successfully escaped to Jos, must be apprehended and brought to justice.
“The arrest of the remaining six gang members and friends of Likita Abubakar, a Fulani man who was arrested in Akwanga Saturday the 21st of August, 2021 on his way to Jos with fully loaded arms, must be done,” he said.
The federal lawmaker lamented that some persons in Nigeria are treated as sacred cows and it must be stopped.
