From Teryima Ajijah, Jos

Plateau citizens on Wednesday gave a warm welcome to the former governor of Plateau State, Sen. Joshua Dariye, who was recently given presidential pardon and released from prison.

It was a moment of joy for many Plateau citizens, particularly his political associates and government appointees, who worked with him during his two term tenure as governor of Plateau State.

Dariye was jailed for 14 years without option of fine for misappropriation of public funds, but the jail term was later reduced to 10 years. He should have completed his jail term in 2023, but was given presidential pardon by President Muhammadu Buhari two months ago.

Dariye was incarcerated alongside the former governor of Taraba state, Revd Joly Nyame.

Speaking, Dariye appreciated God, and the people of Plateau State for their prayers and support to him while incarcerated.

Dariye, who became senator representing Plateau Central, after his two terms as governor, said returning to the state after a long time was a joyous moment. He appreciated all for the honour accorded him.

Dariye paid courtesy call on the Gbong Gwom Jos, the Chairman, Council of Chiefs, Plateau state, Da Jacob Gyang Buba at his palace.

Earlier, the former governor visited Government House, Jos, where he was received by Secretary to the Government of the State, Plateau, Prof. Danladi Atu.

Atu, on behalf of the Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong welcomed Dariye back home.

Atu said he was standing in for the governor, government, and people of Plateau State to receive Sen. Dariye, who he said has passed through a phase in life, only the strong hearted can endure.

He thanked God for the safe return of Sen Dariye and also appreciated God for the life of his family, particularly his wife, who had to endure his absence while he was incarcerated.
