The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Nasarawa State has decried the high cost of nomination forms as announced by the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC).
The NASIEC Chairman had at a recent meeting with political parties preparatory to the October 6 Local Government Council elections in the state, announced that the Councillorship and Chairmanship form Chairmanship nomination forms will be sold at cost of N200,000 and N500,000 respectively.
In an expanded meeting of PDP State Executive Council held on Tuesday in Lafia, the party Chairman in the state, Mr Francis Orugu, said given the economic hardship being experienced in the state and country at large, the amount was too high and not affordable.
He advised the commission to emulate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and make their nomination forms free to candidates vying for elective positions.
The PDP Chairman also kicked against the Local Government Electoral Law which states that results of the LG election would be announced by the chairman of the commission.
He said PDP was consulting with her legal team with a view of challenging the portion of the electoral law in the state that gives the chairman of NASIEC the powers to announce election results.
“If free and fair election is conducted any day in the state, PDP will win by landslide,” he said.
The PDP chairman called on State and National Assembly members elected on the platform of the party who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to vacate their seats or face legal action.
“Those who were elected on the platform of PDP are free to defect to any party if they want to, but they cannot go with the party’s mandate,” he said.
He disclosed that the party would participate in the October 6 scheduled election while calling on members to showcase their candidates for various positions.
