A Council Chairman in Benue, Mr Joseph Asawa of Ushongo Local Government has taken a 43-year-old man, Aondohembafan Vembe, before a Chief Magistrate Court in Makurdi for allegedly publishing several libelous and injurious falsehoods against him on Facebook.
The suspect, who resides opposite Lessel International School, Ushongo, Benue State, was arraigned by the Benue State Police Command for Cyber Stalking, contrary to Section 24 (1) (a) (b), (2) (a) (c) of Cybercrime (Prohibitions Prevention Act) 2015.
According to the Prosecutor, ASP Gbakor Hyacinth, the suspect was arrested, following a letter of complaint written by Terna Agerzua and Associates, Mhembe Chambers Barristers, on behalf of the chairman, alleging that the suspect, through his Facebook account has been publishing several libelous and injurious falsehood against the person and office of the chairman of Ushongo Local Government Council.
He further alleged that the suspect had intended to lower the image and hard earned reputation of the chairman in the eyes of the public and members of the society, who now view him (chairman) as a very corrupt and unworthy of holding any public office.
No plea for want of jurisdiction was taken when the suspect was arraigned in court as the prosecutor asked for an adjournment to complete the investigation.
Ruling on the matter, the Magistrate, V. T. Kor Esq, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N500,000 and one surety in the like sum, while adjourning the case to 21 September, 2021 for further mention.
