Benue State Government has solicited for stronger synergy with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development for the exploration of the numerous mineral deposits in the state.
Governor Samuel Ortom disclosed this Thursday when the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uchechukwu Samson Ogah, paid him a courtesy call at the New Banquet Hall, Benue People’s House, Makurdi.
The governor said, “Benue State is endowed with several mineral resources which if explored, will add to the development of the state and the country in particular, “I appeal to the Federal Government to grant the State Government the right to issue license to miners, this will also enable the states to derive funds for development “, the governor said.
He commended President Muhamadu Buhari for providing security to communities where the minerals are deposited and appealed to him to do more for the protection of lives and properties of the citizenry.
Earlier in an address, the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Ochechukwu Samson Ogah said his visit was to collaborate with the Benue State Government to tap the mineral resources in the state.
“According the benefits to derive from establishing and sustaining mutual synergy with the Benue State Government is increase in revenue as we promote sustainable growth of the mineral sector,the creation of employment opportunities for teeming youths and economic empowerment of host communities, saying it will lead to reduction in the poverty level of rural communities.
In his words “I’m stressing the need for both our Ministry and your Government to cherish and sustain this mutually beneficial partnership to transform the rich mineral endowment of Benue State into wealth for the people of the state in particular and Nigerians at large.”
He maintained that, the ministry was seeking the support and cooperation of Benue State Government in key areas to enhance revenue generation from mining operations explaining that the strategy will enable the state government to benefit from the statutory allocation of 13% derivation.
According to him, the ministry will also encourage the State Government to participate in mining activities using Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which the state can establish, invest and undertake mining activities in line with the provision of Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act,2007 and the Nigerian Mineral and Mining Regulations, 2011 as well as to fight illegal mining and smuggling of mineral commodities.
