NAPPS laments multiple taxation in Benue, calls for review

By Faith Igbudu

National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has cried out to the Benue State Ministry of Education, to tackle the issue of multiple taxation/levies which they say has become unbearable for members.

They made this known today during a courtesy call on the Commissioner for Education, Dr Sarwuan Tarnongu at the ministry’s headquarters in Makurdi.

Chairman NAPPS, Rev. Dr Philip Ominyi, who spoke on behalf of the group said they are stakeholders in the education of the Benue child and their desire is to be in a position to provide quality education at all times.

“One of the major problems is multiple taxation/levies that if care is not taken, will throw out most of our members out from this social service to humanity.

“Private schools are faced with multiple taxes/levies, subjecting a private school to pay very high amount of money per session is very enormous and unbearable. It is in this purpose that we have come to you for a possible solution especially for levies that are being collected by the Ministry of Education,” he said.

Ominyi, in his address also requested that the ministry discourage illegal and unapproved schools, as well as map out measures to tackle unwarranted school transfer of pupils and students as the case may be.

He asked that the ministry consider private school in the distribution of educational materials, furniture’s and other needs and also consider them for the release of capitalization grants which is the annual budget.

While presenting other issues, the chairman, promised that members of the association will continue to work with the ministry and any other relevant agencies in a harmonious relationship to restore the glory of education in Benue State.

NAPPS is an association of all Private Schools; including nursery, primary and secondary schools in Nigeria with branches in the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Tertiary (FCT) Abuja.
