The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has commenced a week long accreditation and re-accreditation of about 30 courses at the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa Local Government Area (LGA), in Nasarawa state.
The leader of NBTE delegation, Mr Rufai Ibrahim disclosed this while speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the institution in Nasarawa LGA of the state.
According to him, the exercise began on Monday and programmes including Mass Communication, Engineering programmes such as civil and mechanical engineering among others have been penned down for the exercise expected to conclude on Friday.
He said: “The exercise is part steps we take as part of quality assurance to ensure that students get the best education that they deserve.
“The exercise will cover Mass Communication, Engineering programmes such as civil and mechanical engineering just to mention a few,” he said.
He , therefore commended the management of the institution for the infrastructural development of the institution and for the cooperation they have received so far and called for its sustenance.
Also speaking, Acting Director, Information and Public Unit of the institution, Hajiya Safina Sanusi-Sabo, said the ongoing accreditation and re-accreditation exercise in the institution was going on smoothly.
She explained that the exercise was done every five years to make sure programmes offered in different polytechnics are up to standard.
“This is because the NBTE has its standards and this exercise is like a checkmate on the polytechnics offering the programmes to see if they are up to standard.
“Like I told you it is done every five years. After the expiration of five years, a programme should be re-accredited to the institution. Then we have accreditation for new programmes.
“So this exercise is a combination of re-accreditation of already existing programmes after five years and accreditation proper I’d for newly introduced programmes that were introduced in the last two years.
“Normally accreditation is done after two years. If a new programme is introduced, it is under interim till after two years when it is fully accredited. At that time the NBTE team comes, check and if they are okay, they now accredited the programme.
“Some of those for re-accreditation are National Diploma (ND) in Mass Communication, ND in Public Administration, HND and ND in Library Science, ND in Computer Science, HND and ND in Business Administration and ND and HND in Architectural Technology among others,” she said.
She lauded the institution’s rector, Alhaji Abdullahi Ahmed, for being a visionary leader and ensuring that all of the institution’s programs are effectively run for the benefit of the students.
