From Esther Akaa, Lafia

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Nasarawa State chapter has condemned in strong terms alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl by a Police officer in the state.

The Voice earlier reported that  a police inspector attached to the State Intelligence Bureau, Nasarawa State Police Command (name withheld) was accused of defiling and impregnating his 15-year-old niece (name withheld), who lives with him in Lafia, the state capital.

A statement signed on Thursday by the state Chairman of NAWOJ, Comrade Hadiza Umar urged the police to investigate and ensure  that justice was served.

Umar expressed disappointment that the inhumane act said to have committed by an officer of the law whose duty was to protect citizens.

“We are calling for the prosecution of the police officer, who was said to have repeatedly raped his 15-year-old niece, in order to serve as deterrent to others.

“As women of the pen profession, NAWOJ assures of carrying out its mandate of projecting and protecting all issues that concern women and children in the state,” she said.

She, therefore, assured of the association’s commitment to follow keenly and report proceedings of the court sessions until the culprit was prosecuted and justice served.
