THE Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi one is of the most standard stadia in the country. Named after the first civilian governor of Benue State, the late Chief Apollos Aper Aku, who a sportsman, a keen sports lover who and had contributed to sports development during his tenure as governor.
IT is noteworthy that during his tenure, sports activities had blossomed with the formation of many football clubs, volleyball and handball teams. It is recalled that as a baskeballer himself, he took particular interest in the promotion of the game to the extent that some players from the state even featured for the national team.
The Benue State handball team, the Benue Buffaloes rose to prominence at the national level, winning championships and producing players for the national handball team, some of who progressed to professional careers abroad.
IT is regrettable that such a befitting edifice in his memory that has played host to numerous national and international matches is today in a state of disrepair.
TODAY, facilities at the stadium complex have deteriorated to a level that most of the roofs, including that of grandstand had collapsed, while the toilets are simply unusable.
IT is imperative therefore, that all these facilities be immediately refurbished while the abandoned swimming pool, whose design was of Olympic size, be also completed. Unused pitches that had become farm lands should be immediately reverted to the sports pitches which they were meant to be.
MANY stadia, the world over play host to national and international championships because of the standard of facilities that they present. And certainly, the completion of the Olympic size swimming pool and refurbishing of the toilet facilities would enhance the competitive status of the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.
IT behoves the Benue State Government to therefore, immediately refurbish the stadium.
THIS is more so that it is the home ground of Lobi Stars Football Club of Makurdi, a Nigerian Premier League side with great national and international potential.
