Niger Assembly calls for payment of retirees

Niger State House of Assembly has urged the executive arm to as a matter of urgency consider the  payment of benefits to the retirees in the state, in order to relieve them from the current economic hardship.

This followed adoption of motion raised under matter of urgent public importance brought by member representing Bosso Constituency, AbdulMalik Madaki  at plenary on Wednesday.

In view of the House resolutions, the Director General of the Niger State Pension Board was directed to appear and explain to the House, the inconsistencies surrounding employees retirement contributory pension scheme in the state.

In his submission, the sponsor of the motion Madaki noted that the earlier the House passed the Niger State Contributory Pension Scheme Law that repeals the old pension law, the better.

He further stated that the new contributory pension scheme law provides for classes of pensioners that fall under the old pension scheme while others belong to the new pension scheme.

He said the uncertainty surrounding the issue of payment of pensioners need to be addressed, pointing out that even some retirees under the old pension scheme, who have served the state in different capacity are yet to enjoy their retirement benefits thereby causing untold hardship to the retirees.

“After putting 35 years of service, after retirement you are unable to access what is called gratuity is terrible, after the director general’s appearance, our next line of action will be taken,” he said.
