Niger govt moves against thuggery, youth restiveness

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has said government would no longer tolerate thuggery and youth restiveness in the state, particularly now that the general election is approaching.

The governor stated this in an interactive section with stakeholders, through his deputy, Ahmed Mohammed Ketso at Justice Legbo Kutigi Conference Hall, Tuesday in Minna.

He said: “Emphasizing that the responsibility of protection of lives and property of people remains the cardinal objectives of any responsible government and the present administration would not fail in that aspect.

“Politicians are warned to stop involving hoodlums in their selfish desire.

“Government has over the years tolerated various acts of youth restiveness within the state, hence remains determined to correct all wrongs.”

Governor Bello also explained that his administration has prioritized youth empowerment in all aspect of trade given opportunities to youth to realise their potential in all fields of endeavour.

Also speaking, All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship flagbearer in the state, Umar Mohammed Bago called on youth to disengage themselves from any form of thuggery, as well as cleared the air that he has never had anything to do with drug addiction and thuggery as been accused.

Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Bala Kuryas called on parents and politicians to desist from supporting any youth restiveness, stressing that security agencies will not relent in punishing any persons, who take laws in their hands.

“More will be arrested and charged to court without bail,” he stated.

The commissioner advised tricycle riders to adhere to time given to work.

Also speaking, state Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Barr Haruna Kwetishe assured Niger populace that drugs will be kicked out completely from the state.

According to him, 23 tons of drugs were burnt within December last year to now, and presently one trailer load of drugs has been arrested and it is in the office.

He added that youths get tested before getting employed and if anyone is positive, he or she is automatically disqualified.
