The Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, Chief George Alli, on Tuesday signed into law, the Environmental Sanitation Bill which makes it an offence for residents of Otukpo who ignore their environmental sanitation.
According to a press release signed by the chairman’s special Adviser on Media and Gender Affairs, Desmond Oogwu, and made available to newsmen, the law stipulates that violators and sanitation offenders will be fined between 1,000 naira and 30,000 naira or imprisoned or made to render community service, depending on the gravity of the charges preferred against them by the Otukpo Environmental Sanitation Mobile Court.
According to the law, Otukpo residents who fail to clean drainages in front of their homes and business areas such as restaurants, hotels, stores and schools, among others, will be fined in accordance with the provisions of the Otukpo Environmental Sanitation Law 2020, as passed.
The bill was sponsored by Ben Idah, the Counsellor representing Ewulo Ward in the Otukpo Legislative Assembly.
Alli, commended the Counsellors for their untiring effort in ensuring the timely passage of the bill into law.
He maintained that the environmental sanitation taskforce now have enough teeth to enforce sanitation laws in the council, adding that, People should learn to take care of their surroundings as cleanliness is next to godliness.
