Phoenix University, Agwada in Kokona Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, says it was mobilising the best human and material resources available to provide highly qualitative and affordable education for youths across the country.
The University which is the first indigenous private university in Nasarawa State is to commence its maiden academic session in January 2024.
Pioneer Vice Chancellor( VC) of the University, Professor Abdullahi Bala disclosed this at the maiden press briefing organised by the institution on Wednesday in Kokona LGA of the state.
According to him, the university has concluded arrangements to begin the 2023/ 2024 academic session in January 2024, aimed at providing qualitative and affordable education in order to raise the standard of education in the state and country at large.
Bala who is the immediate past VC of Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State explained that the philosophy of Phoenix University was to embrace a model of pragmatic teaching, learning and research, capable of creating a balance between practical and theoretical modes of teaching and learning.
He stated that the privately owned institution had received approval from all national regulatory agencies to begin with three faculties including Natural and Applied Sciences, Computing as well as Social and management sciences.
The VC also stated that applications for a number of programmes were still being accepted, saying that all applicants must meet the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) cut-off mark of 140.
He said, “To qualify for admission into Phoenix University, all candidates are expected to meet the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) minimum cut-off mark of 140 and possess five credit passes in relevant subjects, including Mathematics and English, in the SSCE (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) at not more than two sittings.
“Phoenix University received formal approval and registration of the Federal Executive Council on 27th May 2023, after fulfilling all initial regulatory requirements and was subsequently issued with a provisional license for its take-off by the National Universities Commission on Friday, 9th June 2023.
“The University received a Resource Verification Team from the National Universities Commission on Tuesday, 28th November 2023, to inspect the adequacy of our facilities to commence academic activities.
“Owing to the quality of our infrastructural and academic resources, we recently received the final approval to commence formal academic activities and admissions into the 24 academic programs that were presented for Resource Verification.
“We intend to produce skilled graduates who are not only employable, but are able to employ themselves and others.”
Bala further stated that the university had installed a strong IT infrastructure that will allow for seamless virtual interaction in the lecturer/student relationship, adding that the infrastructure currently in place will enable the school to deliver remote instructional models where time and space will be eliminated.
“Our on-site instructional facilities are top grade. All our classrooms are fitted with interactive boards as well as white boards to enable transition from one mode of instruction to the other as the case may require. That also means that lecturers will have no excuse not to deliver their lectures as they can do so from any part of the world.
“All our students will be housed in campus- based hostels. There are two completed hostels each for male and female students. This means that our students will live on campus and thereby be able to concentrate on learning and other academic activities.
” The University has built a fully functional Students’ Centre that will provide recreational and shopping facilities so that our students will have all their needs met without going outside the campus,” he added.
He therefore called on the general public to take advantage of the top- grade facilities provided at Phoenix University to give their children and wards the best education available in the state.
The VC, appreciated the Governor of the State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule for creating an enabling environment for take off of the University by awarding contract for the reconstruction of the 50-km Kokona-Agwada Road, saying it will ease access to campus of the institution.
He equally thanked the traditional rulers , heads of security agencies, opinion leaders and members of the host community for the tremendous support extended to the University and called for sustenance.
