Police arraign farmer for cannibalism

A 45-year-old farmer, Jeremiah Odeh was Tuesday arraigned by the Benue State Police Command for allegedly beheading and eating the head of a 65-year-old woman, Pricilla Adoga in Oju Local Government Area of Benue.

The accused, who was arraigned before a Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court for culpable homicide and cannibalism under Section 222 and 219 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue State 2004 is reported to have cut the victim’s head into pieces, cooked and prepared pepper soup with it.

The prosecutor, Inspector Omaye Ujata told the court that the incident occurred on August 15, 2022 and was reported to the Oju police station at about 0630hrs by one Igiri Silas, male of Igwe Ochekpo village Oju LGA on August 16, 2022.

According to Ujata, Silas reported at the Police station that his uncle’s wife named Priscilla Adoga, female, aged 65 years of same address went to her piece of land and met one Jeremiah Odeh, male, of same address farming on the said piece of land and when she tried to stop him from working on the land, the said Odeh became violent and matcheted her to death.

“That the said Jeremiah cut off her head, cut it into pieces, prepared pepper soup with it and was caught eating it,” he said.

No plea for want of jurisdiction was taken when the charges were read before the accused person as the prosecutor asked for adjournment to complete investigation in the matter.

The Magistrate, Regina D. Alashi, Esq. adjourned the case to October 11, 2022 for further mention and ordered that the accused person be remanded at the Nigerian correctional facility in Makurdi.
