Police parade kidnap kingpins, recover arms in Benue

Benue State Police Command has arrested five (5) persons suspected to be criminals and two (2) members of a notorious armed robbery and kidnap syndicate, Kashima Igbauke Anja (aka Takari) and Terlumun Anja (aka Aromi), who were alleged to be planning to kidnap and assassinate the Chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Mr Alfred Atera.

The other suspected criminals paraded with the kidnappers were Fabian Nyamhena, Awuasaa Kelvin all of Aliade town; Chiata Ihom and Shimangi Nyeriyo, all of Zaki Biam; and Ornya Micheal, arrested along Ikpayongo-Makurdi road “with assorted GSM phones numbering 13, nine chargers all concealed in a black nylon bag in his possession.”

Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, who disclosed this Tuesday, in a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, said luck ran out of the suspects when men of Operation Zenda Special Tactical Team, acting on intelligence, swung into action and rounded them up, with the gang leader, “Shimiwoo” at large.

The statement read in part: “On 05/10/2022 at about 1540hrs, men of Operation Zenda Special Tactical team received an intelligence that a set of notorious armed robbing/kidnapping syndicate were planning to kidnap and assassinate the current Katsina-Ala Local Government Chairman, Mr. Alfred Atera.

“Based on the information, the Police team trailed and arrested one Kashima Igbauke Anja aka “Takari” and Terlumun Anja aka “Aromi” members of the dreaded gang led by “Simiwoo” now at large. Items recovered from them include one (1) locally made pistol and investigation on going. Suspects confessed to have been sent to do the job.”

The statement further stated that on the same date of “5/10/2022 at about 0530hrs, while men of Operation Zenda Special Tactical team where on routine patrol, along Taraku-Otukpo road, they stumbled on armed men, who had blocked the road and were robbing motorists of their valuables.

“On sighting the patrol vehicle, the armed men opened fire on the police vehicle but the Policemen courageously responded with superior fire power which resulted into a gun duel.

“In the process, one of the armed robbers sustained gunshot injuries and was confirmed dead at the hospital while others escaped into the bush. Further investigation led to the arrest of one Fabian Nyamhena ‘M’ and Awuasaa Kelvin all of Aliade town as suspects in the case. Items recovered from them include one (1) Locally fabricated AK-47 rifle loaded with four (4) rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, one (1) fabricated pistol and five (5) cartridges. Suspects confessed to have committed the offence.

“They total number of persons paraded were seven, with five arms, nine ammunition, nineteen cartridges and thirteen number of phones.”
