Management of the Benue State University, Makurdi has sent 200-600 level medical students on one-month suspension.
This was contained in a press release signed and made available to The Voice by the Registrar of the university, Dr. Mfaga Modom on Monday.
According to the release, the suspension takes effect from 8 a.m. Monday, 30th October, 2023 and they are to resume on Wednesday, 29th November, 2023.
The release states that, “Management Committee had reviewed the recent actions of 200 to 600 level Medical Students and has also carefully reviewed the reports from the Dean of Students, the Coordinator of Security and Resolutions that arose from the meeting between Management Committee and Academic Staff of the College of Health Sciences regarding the Students demonstration of Wednesday, 25th October 2023”.
The Management Committee frowned at the medical students’ unwillingness to obey authority before, during and after the demonstration and so resolved that the Management Committee would constitute an Investigative Committee to look into the remote and immediate causes of the demonstration and advise as appropriate.
The release stated that top management committee of the College of Health Sciences has been directed to implement the resolutions of the reports of the various committees on the students’ demonstration.
Furthermore, upon resumption, each student is to bring a sworn affidavit from a competent court of law attesting the student would be of good conduct, adding that each student must come along with his/her parent or guardian who will sign an undertaking.
The committee further resolved that, the Benue State University Medical Students Association (BESUMSA) has been suspended with immediate effect till further notice, and the affected students were directed to vacate their hostels by 10 a.m., adding that academic activities of 100-level students of the college remain continual.
Efforts by our correspondent to speak with the union leader of the medical students proved abortive as he was neither picking his calls nor replying to text messages put across to him.
