The Director of Sports, Benue State Sports Council, Comrade Philip Nongo, has charged the Benue State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN, to give sports in the state, wide publicity, to enable them to succeed.
Comrade Nongo stated this when the leadership of the association, paid him a courtesy call in his office recently, at the Sports Council. He said, ” with the calibre of people that I have seen in the leadership of SWAN, I have no doubt that you are going to move sports forward in Benue state, to attain an enviable height”.
The Director of Sports who acknowledged the observations made by SWAN that the roof at the Aper Aku stadium was leaking and the toilet facilities were also unhygienic and not befitting of a stadium such as Aper Aku stadium Makurdi, where people from all walks of life can troop in to watch sporting activities and not find a conducive place to ease themselves, explained that the roof was leaking even before he became the Director of Sports in 2015 and that he was also aware of the poor state of toilet facilities.
He further noted that all the problems were capital projects for which it was the responsibility of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to handle but that his responsibility was to inform and continue to inform them which he had been doing but to no avail.
He added that,” we have complained severally to the government but to no avail and now that you have also reminded us, we will also remind them and I am sure the governor will also hear it”.
Comrade Nongo who congratulated the leadership of SWAN on their well deserved election, saying,” I was initially working on securing for you office accommodation before the crisis in SWAN erupted but now that everything was over, I will put heads together with my management team and see how we can create an office for you. And we will continue to partner with you anytime we have problems so that they can be solved”, he submitted.
Earlier in his speech, the state chairman of SWAN, John Shiaondo said they were in his office, to pledge their partnership with the Sports Council and government, for the development of sports in Benue state.
Shiaondo who drew the attention of the Sports Director on the leaking roof at the stadium and poor state of the toilet facilities, requested for office accommodation for the association to do its work effectively, saying,” we will continue to work with you to develop and promote sports in Benue state”.
