Volunteer Guards: I’m only exercising my responsibilities – Ortom

By Sunday Iduh

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has said he was only living up to his responsibility to the people by establishing the Benue Community Volunteer Guards (BSCVG), haven sworn to protect them as their governor.

“What I have done is exercising my responsibility to my people. We are committed to the people. We can not afford to disappoint them. They elected us. It is our duties to protect them,” he maintained.

The governor made this position known Monday at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi during a courtesy call by Northern Christian Women Coalition (NCWC).

He commended the body for chosing to promote the gospel in the North. “For you to have come out to show the world that despite the challenges, you are committed to the course of the gospel, it is worthy of commendation,” he said.

Governor Ortom advised NCWC to continue to spread the message so that the rest of the women in other regions will join them.

Earlier, in a remark, Chairperson of NCWC, Princess Leah Solomon disclosed that NCWC, which is targeted mainly at women is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Great Gender Grass Root Foundation and has presence in the 19 northern states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to Princess Solomon; “Our objectives include but is not limited to inter-faith initiatives, peaceful co-existence, being a voice to the orphans, mentoring women on capacity building, programmes/interventions for IDPs camps to Northern Christian women and children, politics and entrepreneurship.

“During this political dispensation our goals are to engage each political party with our demands for representation in governance because Northern Christian Women are the most neglected group in the political space in Nigeria.

“Mobilize women to get their PVC and ensure they turn out to vote on voting days.”

She commended the governor for his courage, commitment and for also giving women a place in his administration. “We are in the know of the several political positions women are occupying in the state.

“You have fought tirelessly over insecurity in your state and the Middle Belt at large. This singular effort of yours has by extension become a voice for the Northern Christian women and youth. As you know, when these terrorists attack, the men are the highest casualties, leaving the women and their children to fend for themselves.

“We are grateful to you for taking the cry of the indigenous Nigerians about the spate of killings going on in Nigeria to the international community, July 16, 2022 where you visited the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

“Your most recent remarkable achievement is the inauguration of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards at Makurdi. You are not only mentioning the state of insecurity but with this, you are providing solutions to the problems. Kudos to you, sir.”

Other members of the delegation include the Welfare Officer of NCWC, Josephine Douglas; Treasurer, Kehi Nathan; Benue State Chairperson, Joyce Akuraga and the Benue State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Akpen Leva.
