The Director General, Benue State Television Corporation, Dr Patience Achakpa-Ikyo has stressed the need for greater unity and courage to ease the fears of the people, to set the world on track for a better future.

Dr Achakpa-Ikyo, who was represented by Dr Kwasedoo Ngbea, stated this in a keynote address at the unveiling and inauguration of the Dr Ray Anumve Foundation (DRAF’s) advisory board, ambassadors and volunteers, held Saturday at the Doo Palace Hotel, Makurdi, Benue State.

She said, poverty, improper engagement of the youths, conflicts, human rights rules among other issues posed a problem when it comes to peace resolution.

“Youths and women are important peace builders but have always faced discrimination of all kinds at home, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps etc. Every body wants or craves for development but sadly, we are rather going backward because of the conflicts, herders attacks, economic meltdown among others we are facing which has affected every one directly or indirectly.

“The vision of the foundation is timely because, inequalities are increasing, leaving so many isolated from progress with financial, land, hunger conflicts with the human rights rules posing a problem when it comes to peace resolution,” she explained.

The DG, opined that critical building and sustaining peace and development requires tracing the root causes of conflicts and crisis.

She added that because None Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) play a vital role in bringing peace and development to conflict affected communities before government comes to the aid of victims.

According to her, the foundation should embrace honesty and create better awareness to volunteers, in order to avoid diversion of relief materials from the needy, as experienced by other NGO’s and called on all to support the DRAF initiative to realise her dreams.

Speaking, Founder, Dr Ray Anumve Foundation (DRAF), Dr Raymond Anumve said, having a humanitarian spirit means having an idea to help.

“Help can come from even a leper or physically challenged, who is structured to change lives. This means every one can help.

“We are here because my spirit has always disturbed me to see a way to offer a helping hand to another. When we have challenges, there is need for us to come together and see how we can address those challenges.

“There are challenges that we can address just by talking to some one and this could avoid suicide. My idea is a focus divergence to other areas that need proper attention like, lifting lives and transforming communities through peace building, conflict resolution and development in Benue and Nigeria as a whole,” he explained.

He added that the root cause of underdevelopment is the absence of peace and solicited partnership from notable individuals with other existing NGO’s, whom he promised to support as an individual or foundation so that it can foster peace in the state.

Dr Anumve also revealed that, “in the ongoing project, the foundation was going to introduce projects that will try to uproot some of the conflicts that we face. I know that the impact may be little but with God and our joint efforts in unity, it can be do it.”

“We have very serious challenges of attacks, communal conflicts but all those things can be tackled one after the other if we have the courage and commit ourselves to it,” he stressed.

He called on the government to look the side of NGO’s and support them in any way possible so that the organizations can flourish and compliment her in areas it can’t reach.

The Chairman, Dr Christopher Ngara who was represented by Dr John Onah in his welcome address said, such auspicious event was important to the foundation and the core values were timely.

“Our world today needs such foundations, within the present situation all hands must be on deck to ensure this country moves forward,” he stated.

He assured that, the foundation will live according to its purpose and values and urged partners to contribute generously to the success of the foundation.

Highpoints of the occasion were good will messages from partners, unveiling the DRAF certificate, inauguration of ambassadors, advisory board and the volunteers team and presentation of DRAF profile.
