Woman arrested for beating step son to death in Makurdi

The Benue State Police Command has arrested a step mother, Charity Upev for allegedly beating her step Son, Fanen Yange to death for stealing a piece of meat from her pot of soup.

A statement released Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, in Makurdi, said the deceased aged 10 years old was beaten in the daytime by the step mother for the offense of stealing and died when he had gone to sleep in the night.

The statement titled: “Alleged killing of a step son in Makurdi” read in part, “On 23/1/2023 at about 1700hours, a case of culpable homicide was reported at ‘E’ Police Division, Makurdi. A team of detectives were deployed immediately.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased, Fanen Yange,10 years old of near International Market Area, Makurdi was alleged  by his step mother, Mrs. Upev  to have stolen meat from the pot and she beat him up during the early hours of the day but when the victim went to sleep at night, he could not wake up.

“Fanen has been confirmed dead by a doctor and his corpse deposited at the Bishop Murray Hospital morgue in Makurdi for autopsy.”

SP Anene, further said the suspect is in police custody while investigation is ongoing.
