An Association of Married Women (Kasev Mba Yaav), resident in Makurdi metropolis last Saturday embarked on a sanitation to sweep the J. K. N. Waku road in their community in appreciation and support of the Benue State government.
According to the Chairperson of the Association, Mrs. Veronica Ummah, the association which was registered about 15 years ago took the decision to sweep the road and weed grasses besides it so as to ensure proper maintenance of the road.
“The women are happy that government has constructed the NKST, Yina- International Market road, so during our meeting we decided that, every sanitation day, we will sweep the road and weed grasses beside it because if we don’t maintain the road and it gets bad, we’ll be the ones to suffer.
“This gesture is to appreciate the Benue State Government and also support it. We started sweeping from the International Market end to NKST, Yina”, she stated.
She disclosed that membership of the Association is drawn from Iorhom community but neighbouring communities like Nyorgyungu and Apkehe can join as well.
In her remarks, the Matron of the Association, Mrs. Mary Agbenge, appealed to the Benue State Government to consider the road among such roads where people are assigned to sweep daily in town.
On his part, Mr. Mluna Kunde, Chairman, Iorhom Residents Association, who also participated in the sanitation said the women have done their part as an appreciation and contribution to the success of the Alia administration.
He expressed the hope that all community members will come out en-masse next sanitation day to clean all the streets within the community as a mark of promoting public health and environmental health within the community.
He called on the government to assist them in the major environmental and ecological challenges in order to address the issues of flooding within the community whenever there is a downpour as well as support the community effort in the sanitation by providing nose masks and other materials.
Other groups that participated in the exercise were, Benue Women for Alia and Alia Mothers Association.
