The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia last Thursday, inaugurated a new leadership for the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) with a charge to immediately commence the processes for the conduct of the local government council elections in the state.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration which was held in the New Banquet Hall of Government House Makurdi, the Governor described the constitution of a new leadership for the Commission as a significant milestone in the journey of Nigeria’s democracy, particularly at the grassroots level in Benue State.
The Governor congratulated the new Chairman and members of BSIEC on their inauguration even as he commended the Benue State House of Assembly for the rigorous screening process it conducted which led to prompt confirmations.
Addressing the new executives of BSIEC, the Governor said, “Each of you has been selected based on your nonpartisan stance, outstanding qualifications, integrity, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles, which are fundamental to the progress of our state and the core principles required for the survival of our thriving democracy.
“In nominating each member, we were guided by the law establishing the commission, which unequivocally demands that the chairman and members possess unquestionable integrity. This underscores the critical role that the commission plays in laying the foundation for our democracy, as the Local Government Councils and council wards serve as the primary interface between the government and the people.
“I entrust upon you the responsibility of ensuring the consolidation of democracy at this vital level by conducting elections that are free, fair, and credible, accurately reflecting the will and aspirations of the people of Benue State. Our people deserve nothing less than a system where their voices are heard through their votes.”
He therefore urged the Chairman and members to demonstrate courage and steadfastness in the face of challenges while assuring them that the government stands firmly behind them in the noble endeavour.
“I cannot overemphasize the importance of unity and resilience in overcoming obstacles; together, you can achieve great progress and prosperity for the state.
“I want to assure you of the government’s commitment to upholding the independence of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission. You can count on the full support of the government in the discharge of your duties. This government is dedicated to upholding the tenets of democracy and ensuring that the electoral process in Benue State is transparent, credible, and inclusive,” adding that, “I anticipate that following your swearing-in, you will promptly embark on outlining your program of activities and devising a realistic election timetable.
